No — the mats have a soft leather surface and the trays are soft silicone, so both are safe on wood, metal, and painted surfaces.
GripMag holds metal parts — screws, bolts, drill bits — in place on top of the mat. The mat sits on any surface (wood, plastic, metal). It's the parts you place on it that need to be ferrous metal.
Built to hold through normal workshop use — knocks, angled surfaces, and being moved mid-job. The rare-earth magnet holds firmly on vertical surfaces. Not designed to survive being thrown or dropped from height.
